Cernavodă reactors stay offline until Danube water level permits safe restart
Both units at Romania's Cernavodă nuclear plant remain shut, with Nuclearelectrica saying the pause poses no nuclear safety risk but cuts electricity output.
The two reactors at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant continue to be offline, maintained in a secure shutdown state according to Nuclearelectrica. The firm assures that the plant’s design includes several cooling arrangements that can function across different Danube water levels, so nuclear safety is not compromised. Ongoing Romanian authority measures reinforce pump protection and system redundancy.
While the shutdown impacts electricity production, safety protocols and specialist teams remain fully operational. General manager Mihai Laurențiu Gioară noted the period is being used for maintenance and resilience upgrades. The company is consulting experts to mitigate similar future disruptions, but no specific restart date has been set, pending hydrological conditions.
Why it matters
The prolonged shutdown reduces Romania's power supply while highlighting nuclear safety safeguards tied to river water levels.
