Ceuta’s new migrant camp reaches capacity, many remain homeless on streets

The Spanish government inaugurated a temporary migrant reception camp on two parcels of Ceuta’s port, marking it as full in Spanish, English and Arabic signs within a few hours. Migrants who could not secure a place reverted to sheltering on Benítez and Trampolín beaches or vanished into the city’s periphery. The relocation began before dawn, with police confronting crowds, resulting in stampedes, riot-police warnings, police charges and several injuries before order was restored.

Authorities attributed the surge to a court case brought by the Sindicato Unificado de Policía, which they say publicized the move. While the government hailed the operation as the most complex ever in Spain and “without incidents,” opposition leaders such as Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal condemned it and called for expulsions, whereas ministers Óscar López and Ángel Víctor Torres defended its civic conduct.
