CGT calls for one-day strike across all TotalEnergies sites in France over jobs and pay

The CGT has urged every TotalEnergies employee in France to strike on Thursday, citing staffing shortages, heavy reliance on temporary contracts and stagnant wages.

The CGT has called for a 24-hour strike on Thursday involving all TotalEnergies sites in France, from refineries and rubber factories to selected service stations. According to the union, staffing levels are precarious, with many positions unfilled, a heavy reliance on temporary workers, repeated short-term contracts and extensive subcontracting, which it says endangers safety. It also criticises pay that has stagnated, noting that in some subsidiaries wages are only at the minimum-wage level.

The action may lead to delayed or halted fuel shipments and could affect roughly 180 Argedis stations, especially those on motorways. TotalEnergies will negotiate the total bonus amount in December’s salary talks. The CFDT, another union, favours dialogue and also demands job security and maintenance investment but has not called for a strike.

Why it matters

A strike at France's largest fuel producer could interrupt gasoline supplies and underscore growing labor tensions in the energy sector.
