Chamath warns AI data-center backlash could derail economic growth

Venture investor Chamath Palihapitiya says resistance to AI data centers is a volatile issue that could cost hundreds of basis points of U.S. GDP.

Chamath Palihapitiya, a prominent venture capitalist and All-In Podcast co-host, described the mounting pushback against AI data centers as a "powder keg" that could erode 200-300 basis points of annual GDP if it spreads. He blamed the leadership of frontier AI firms for failing to convey the public advantages of their industry, especially the role of data centers. Recent regulatory actions in Texas, Pennsylvania and Ohio—ranging from a temporary halt to stricter local veto powers—illustrate the intensifying scrutiny.

Palihapitiya’s remarks came after an report revealed a National Republican Senatorial Committee memo warning that data-center opposition could affect an Ohio Senate contest involving former Senator Sherrod Brown and incumbent Jon Husted. He called on AI executives to adopt a more positive narrative and cease internal disputes to defuse the situation.
