Champion racehorse Galopin Des Champs dies at age 10 after field injury

Galopin Des Champs, the celebrated gelding who captured the Cheltenham Gold Cup in both 2023 and 2024, died at age ten following a serious injury in a field. The horse, a product of trainer Willie Mullins, was found early on with a severe wound to his near front leg that X-rays revealed to be beyond repair. Veterinary staff attended immediately, but the extent of the damage forced the decision to euthanise.

Ruby Walsh disclosed the tragedy, highlighting the horse’s record of three Irish Gold Cup wins at Leopardstown in addition to his double Cheltenham triumphs. He also expressed the deep sorrow felt by Greg, Audrey and Sarah Turley and Adam Connolly, who looked after the horse for an extended period. The racing community mourns the loss of a horse that left a lasting legacy despite a relatively brief career.
