Chancellor Stocker Vows to Keep Coalition Intact Amid SPÖ Turmoil
Chancellor Christian Stocker says the black-red-pink coalition will stay together despite internal disputes within the SPÖ.
Chancellor Christian Stocker told the APA that one outlet coalition of ÖVP, SPÖ and FPÖ will continue as long as it remains capable of governing and producing outcomes for Austria. He rejected speculation about internal SPÖ calls for a snap election, saying no such sentiment was expressed within the party. Emphasising the need for all partners to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities, Stocker said the government will pursue its agenda through the regular 2029 National Council election.
He outlined key initiatives, including a defence service reform, a new social-aid waiting period, a "future depot" savings plan, and a fuel-price brake tied to tax cuts. While acknowledging past friction with the SPÖ, he claimed recent compromises on defence and economic measures demonstrate the coalition’s effectiveness.
Why it matters
The coalition’s stability affects Austria’s policy agenda and upcoming elections.
