Charged rain droplets can corrode metal coatings by creating electric fields
Scientists discovered that moving rain droplets become electrically charged and can erode metal surfaces, even through protective layers.
Research reported in Nature reveals that rain droplets become electrically charged while traveling across smooth substrates, producing an electric field that grows stronger as the drop approaches a metal surface. The team demonstrated that droplets running down windows, leaves, or Teflon-coated copper plates create pits in the metal, whereas droplets landing directly on the metal do not. The electric field eventually overcomes the metal’s resistance, breaking through protective coatings.
Lead author Hans-Jürgen Butt of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research says this hidden chemistry clarifies why corrosion can occur despite anti-rust layers. Materials scientist Preet Singh, who was not involved in the work, notes that better understanding of such mechanisms could reduce costly infrastructure decay. The phenomenon poses no direct hazard to people, but it may inform more reliable coating applications in industry and medicine.
