Charities Board strips Gloriavale trust of status and bans former leader
The Charities Registration Board has deregistered the Christian Church Community Trust and barred former Gloriavale leader Howard Temple from charity governance after finding serious misconduct.
New Zealand’s Charities Registration Board announced the deregistration of the Christian Church Community Trust, which finances the Gloriavale community. The board determined that the trust’s funding enabled illegal activities such as employing children from age six in harsh, sometimes dangerous work, and that it failed to safeguard children and staff from harm. It also highlighted the internal cover-up of a sexual offence at a trust-owned school.
Consequently, the trust will be barred from applying for charitable status for three years, and former community head Howard Temple is prohibited from serving on any charity board. The decision takes effect the following day. The board’s spokesperson said the trust’s operations were inconsistent with the wellbeing of its beneficiaries.
