Charity Shelter accused of inserting pro-migrant messaging into veteran's homelessness story
A homeless British veteran says Shelter asked him to add pro-immigrant commentary to his personal testimony, prompting accusations of political manipulation.
Shelter invited the veteran to contribute his story about defending Britain, coping with PTSD, and navigating homelessness after leaving the army in 2023. After receiving his unedited account, the charity later sent a follow-up email urging him to add language that supports migrants being allocated social housing and criticises blaming migrants for housing shortages. The veteran, who asked to remain anonymous, said he never consented to politicise his narrative and called the request an abuse of his vulnerability.
Conservative MP Katie Lam accused Shelter of using the veteran as a "political pawn" to promote an ideological left-wing campaign. Shelter has apologized, acknowledging a mishandling of the storytelling process, while Chesterfield Borough Council noted it does not policy-wise ask about combat experience, though it recognises military service can affect housing needs.
