Chelsea arrange season-long loan of £40m signing Honest Ahanor to Crystal Palace

Chelsea have verbally agreed to loan 18-year-old defender Honest Ahanor to Crystal Palace for the season before his permanent move to the Blues next summer.

Chelsea have secured a verbal agreement to loan 18-year-old defender Honest Ahanor to Crystal Palace for the upcoming season, after completing a £40 million transfer from Atalanta. Although the move to Chelsea is deferred until the 2027-28 season, the club wants the player to gain top-flight experience now, so he will spend the year with the Eagles under manager Pierre Sage. Ahanor, who has already undergone a medical in London, is expected to have another examination before finalising the loan.

Palace, involved in the UEFA Europa League, will benefit from his versatility as they replace injured left-sided centre-back Chadi Riad and compete with Takehiro Tomiyasu for a starting spot. This loan follows similar Chelsea tactics used with youngsters like Geovany Quenda and Mike Penders, allowing the club to secure future talent while avoiding immediate loan-slot constraints.

Why it matters

It gives Chelsea a promising defender Premier League experience before his scheduled 2027-28 arrival.
