Chelsea rebrands its U21 and U19 squads as Cobham Next Gen
Chelsea announced that its under-21 and under-19 teams will now operate under the name Cobham Next Gen, referencing the club’s academy.
The London club said its reserve sides, previously known as the U21 and U19 squads, will be renamed Cobham Next Gen. Cobham is the title of Chelsea’s renowned academy located in Surrey, southwest of London. The change aims to capitalize on the academy’s reputation and inject fresh momentum into the youth set-up. The U21 side competes in Premier League 2 and often challenges for the title. Current first-team regulars Reece James and Levi Colwill are products of the Cobham system.
Why it matters
The rename ties the reserve teams to Chelsea's famed academy, signalling a renewed focus on youth development.
