Chemical exposure at Iowa prison sends at least 15 patients to regional hospitals
A possible chemical incident at the Newtown Correctional Facility led to more than a dozen people being taken to hospitals across central Iowa.
Around 12:30 p.m., fire and sheriff personnel arrived at the Newtown Correctional Facility following alerts of a potential chemical exposure. Iowa Department of Corrections officials activated emergency protocols and later confirmed that as many as 15 people were moved to four different hospitals in central Iowa. UnityPoint Health indicated four patients each were taken to hospitals in Grinnell and Des Moines, and a MercyOne spokesperson added that nine additional patients were sent to other regional medical centers.
The identities of those affected—whether inmates or prison employees—have not been disclosed, nor have details about their conditions.
