Chemical leak at Toledo industrial site triggers evacuations and shelter-in-place orders

A large chemical release at the MC Tank terminal in Toledo, Ohio, forced residents within one mile to evacuate and those within three miles to shelter in place, with no injuries reported.

A massive chemical leak erupted from the MC Tank terminal at 1050 Progress Ave in Toledo, Ohio, producing a smoke plume of unidentified substances. Toledo Fire and Rescue issued evacuation orders at 10:48 p.m. for all persons within a one-mile radius and later, at 4:24 a.m., a shelter-in-place order for those up to three miles away. Those required to leave may use Shoreland Elementary School as a temporary shelter or the Meijer parking lot off East Alexis, where Red Cross personnel and TARTA buses are prepared to assist.

Residents in the shelter-in-place zone were told to stay indoors, seal windows and doors, shut off any ventilation that draws outside air, and keep pets inside. No injuries have been reported, but the incident prompted the closure of Toledo public schools on Wednesday.

Why it matters

The leak poses a public-health risk and disrupts daily life for thousands of Toledo residents.
