In Palatine, a suburb of Chicago, police detained 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis after a community member reported receiving alarming electronic messages from him. A subsequent raid revealed a gun, several loaded magazines, a large stock of ammunition, a protective tactical vest and an extremist-symbol badge. Investigators also seized a written manifesto espousing white-supremacist ideology and calling for violence against South Asian, especially Indian, people.
While authorities suspect he was planning a mass-shooting, possibly aimed at a Hindu temple, the precise target has not been confirmed. The FBI is assisting the local investigation. Paporakis has been charged with making a terrorist threat and illegal firearm possession, and a judge ordered his continued detention pending a hearing scheduled for later in October.
