Child critically wounded after assault in Auckland’s Myers Park, suspect arrested

A child was seriously injured in an attack at Myers Park in central Auckland on Sunday, and police have taken a 20-year-old suspect into custody.

At roughly 4.45 pm on Sunday, a child was attacked in the playground zone of Myers Park, a central Auckland green space, sustaining injuries that placed the youngster in critical condition at Starship Children’s Hospital. Hato Hone St John dispatched two ambulances, a rapid-response vehicle and an operations manager to the scene, while police cordoned off the area and later detained a 20-year-old male suspect, who had no prior connection to the victim.

Inspector Jim Wilson confirmed that both the child and the alleged perpetrator received medical care and emphasized that the incident was isolated with no continuing danger to the community. Auckland Central MP Chlöe Swarbrick said she had been in contact with police, who asked her to reassure residents that the response was swift and the threat had been neutralised.
