Child dies after falling tree strikes YMCA summer camp in Massachusetts

An 8-year-old was killed and a camp counselor injured when a tree collapsed at the YMCA’s Camp Chickami in Wayland, Massachusetts.

A tragic accident occurred at the YMCA’s Camp Chickami in Wayland when a tree toppled onto another, creating a domino effect that sent a sizable branch onto campers. An 8-year-old boy was struck by the large branch and, after being airlifted, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. A camp counselor was hit by a smaller branch, sustained less serious injuries, and has since been discharged.

West Suburban YMCA President and CEO Jack Fucci announced the camp will remain closed for the rest of the week and that counseling services are being provided to staff, campers, and families. Fire Chief Neil McPherson and Acting Police Chief Mark Hebert both extended sympathies to the victim’s family and urged community members dealing with grief to reach out for help.
