China advances runway construction on Antelope Reef, boosting South China Sea foothold
Satellite images show China rapidly building a runway on Antelope Reef in the Paracels, with completion expected by mid-2027.
Recent satellite imagery captured extensive earth-grading, gravel stockpiles and compaction cranes on Antelope Reef in the Paracels, indicating a 3-km runway is being built. Analysts estimate the runway could be paved and ready for aircraft by mid-2027, potentially becoming China’s most important offshore base in the South China Sea in a decade. The Chinese defence ministry has not commented, and state media portray the installation as serving weather forecasting and scientific research.
Open-source trackers have not observed excavation for ammunition or fuel depots, which such a base would require. The facility would enhance Chinese naval and air deployments, securing approaches to Hainan Island where nuclear-armed submarines are based. This construction follows Beijing’s recent announcement of a joint military support site in Laos, signaling deeper regional presence. Vietnam and Taiwan, both claiming the Paracels, have not responded to inquiries.
Why it matters
The runway could significantly expand China's military reach in a highly contested maritime region.
