China and Pakistan launch high-altitude counterterrorism drills in Xinjiang
China and Pakistan began a nine-day joint training exercise in Korla, Xinjiang, focusing on counterterrorism operations at high altitude.
On October 14, China and Pakistan inaugurated the Karakoram 2026 joint training in Korla, Xinjiang, marking a nine-day series of high-altitude counterterrorism drills. The Chinese Ministry of National Defense highlighted UAV handling, on-the-move target search and firing, long-range sniping and live-force command exercises as core activities. All hardware, from Type 191 rifles to Type 08 infantry fighting vehicles and anti-drone systems, was provided by China, giving Pakistani soldiers exposure to Chinese platforms.
This is the first time regular army units, rather than specialised counterterrorism teams, have participated, deepening the all-weather strategic partnership. The exercises reflect shared concerns over terrorist groups operating along the China-Pakistan and Afghanistan-Pakistan borders, especially the growing use of drones by militants. By enhancing joint tactical skills and command coordination, the drill seeks to improve both nations’ ability to respond to cross-border security challenges.
Why it matters
The drills deepen China-Pakistan military ties and improve joint readiness against terrorism in a volatile border region.
