China commits $1 trillion over five years to build a sports powerhouse and revive consumption
China announced a five-year, $1 trillion investment plan to become a sports powerhouse and stimulate domestic consumption.
The government will allocate at least $1 trillion in the next five years for extensive sports-facility upgrades, a crackdown on corruption and “toxic fan culture,” and to promote public exercise. Officials say the effort should lift weak consumer spending and keep the ageing population healthier. It coincides with new loan-interest subsidies, though ING analysts expect only modest effects.
Why it matters
The plan links massive spending to health, culture and economic revival in China.
