China debuts lifelike robotic fish for autonomous underwater navigation
A fish-shaped robot called the BG-5 Golden Dragon Fish was demonstrated in Beijing, showcasing autonomous swimming and obstacle-avoidance capabilities.
At the 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services in Beijing's Shougang Park, Boyagongdao Marine Technology Group unveiled the BG-5 Golden Dragon Fish, a biomimetic underwater robot modeled after the golden arowana. The device features a three-joint tail divided into seven segments, producing a fish-like undulating propulsion without a conventional propeller. Weighing 3 kg and measuring 640 mm long, it can operate at depths of up to 5 metres and travel at a maximum speed of 0.6 m per second.
Integrated sensors allow the robot to autonomously detect obstacles and chart its own route, while the BG-5V version supports path planning, task allocation, formation control and cooperation among multiple units. The company cites prior defence-related projects, including a biomimetic detection platform and the ROBO-SHARK robot, suggesting potential use in shallow-water reconnaissance and surveillance. The demonstration highlights China's growing focus on biomimetic robotics for both civilian and military applications.
