China drafts tougher vehicle design and testing standards, banning hidden door handles

China's transport ministry released a draft requiring new car models to provide detailed design data and prohibiting fully hidden door handles, with compliance deadlines in 2027.

Starting January 1, 2027, automakers must submit extensive technical information on innovative designs for model approval, and any existing models need to report such details by July 1, 2027. Vehicles that fail testing or contain falsified data will be denied certification, and those already on the market with safety issues must stop production and be recalled. The draft also bans fully hidden door handles, foldable or flexible displays, and the use of zero-gravity or swivel seats while driving, while requiring physical controls for lights and wipers. The proposal, prepared by the ministry together with three other agencies, is open for public comment until November 10.

Why it matters

The rules could reshape vehicle design worldwide and affect safety standards for Chinese and foreign automakers.
