China expands affordable biotech and digital health ties with developing nations
China is increasing its influence in global health by providing low-cost medicines, equipment and digital solutions to low- and middle-income countries.
Chinese biotechnology companies are rapidly expanding output of affordable medicines and medical gear, drawing attention from the world’s largest pharmaceutical corporations. At the same time, China’s national health-care system is piloting large-scale digital models that connect appointments, test results and follow-up care. The country has already delivered COVID-19 vaccines to Indonesia and Mexico and is now financing equipment in Kenya and Côte d’Ivoire, establishing pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing in Zambia, and deploying digital-health solutions worldwide.
These bilateral arrangements differ from traditional multilateral aid, which is declining, and are larger and longer-standing. Experts warn that partnerships must be governed by clear standards to ensure safety, scalability and mutual benefit. Uniform guidelines should apply to any major power’s health agreements.
