China gifts historic far-side moon rock to UN for permanent Vienna display

China handed over a lunar sample from the far side of the Moon, retrieved by Chang’e-6, to the United Nations in Vienna for permanent exhibition.

In September 2026, China formally transferred a lunar specimen collected by the Chang’e-6 probe to the United Nations headquarters in Vienna. The sample, taken from the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the Moon’s far side—the first such material ever returned—will remain on permanent display in the Space Exhibition Area of Building E at the Vienna International Centre. The handover was attended by CNSA Administrator SHAN Zhongde, UN Office in Vienna Director-General Monica JUMA, UNOOSA Director Aarti HOLLA-MAINI and Ambassador LI Song.

Participants described the donation as a step toward collaborative, peaceful use of outer space and echoed President Xi Jinping’s call for a community with a shared future. Experts such as sinologist Richard Trappl and analyst Harvey Dzodin noted the symbolic value of the rock as a “technological ambassador” for China. The exhibit will be accessible to UN staff, visitors and students, while China prepares further lunar missions Chang’e-7 and Chang’e-8.
