China launches naval and air drills around contested Scarborough Shoal
The People’s Liberation Army Southern Theater Command conducted naval and aerial exercises near Scarborough Shoal, a feature claimed by both China and the Philippines.
China’s Southern Theater Command carried out a combined sea and air training operation in the waters and airspace surrounding Scarborough Shoal, which Beijing calls Huangyan Dao. The maneuver was framed as a response to actions by "certain countries" that the Chinese side says have threatened regional peace. Officials said the drills were intended to test and improve capabilities for defending China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. The Philippine embassy in Beijing has not yet commented on the activity.
