China Leads Global Tank Holdings as Russia’s Fleet Shrinks After Ukraine War

A recent assessment ranks China as the world’s biggest tank operator with more than 5,800 main battle tanks, supported by a robust domestic production line. Russia, once the clear leader, now holds an estimated low-to-mid-5,000 tanks after sustained attrition in Ukraine, with confirmed losses of around 4,400 units. North Korea’s near-5,000-strong fleet consists largely of outdated Soviet designs and locally built variants, while the United States maintains a force of over 4,500 M1 Abrams tanks, many pre-positioned for NATO support.

India’s tank count approaches 4,000, featuring licensed Russian models such as the T-90S “Bhishma” and T-72M1 “Ajeya,” alongside a modest number of home-grown Arjun tanks. Despite debates about their battlefield relevance, all five countries continue to invest in armor upgrades, including active protection systems and enhanced armor kits.
