China rejects India's naming of 28 strategic sites in Ladakh

China's foreign ministry said it opposes India's decision to assign standardised names to 28 locations in Ladakh, calling the move illegal.

India's Home Ministry released a list of 28 strategic locations and geographical features in Ladakh, aiming to standardise cartography and improve public awareness of the border region. Among the named sites are Gogra, Hot Spring, and several peaks and passes such as Alisha Giri and Kanishka Peak. In a media briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China has never recognised the Union Territory of Ladakh, which it described as unilaterally and illegally created by India.

She declared that China's opposition to the naming is firm, labeling the action illegal, invalid, and unable to alter the status of the disputed western sector of the China-India boundary, which China asserts has always been its own. The exchange reflects ongoing tensions over the Line of Actual Control, where the two countries previously clashed in 2020.

Why it matters

The dispute highlights continuing Sino-Indian tensions over border sovereignty and cartographic claims.
