China removes two senior generals from Communist Party amid corruption probe

Two top PLA officers, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, were expelled from the Chinese Communist Party after an investigation into corruption and disloyalty.

In a recent party decision, senior PLA figures Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli were removed from the Chinese Communist Party after an internal investigation. Officials said the generals had created factions, acted disloyal, and were involved in grave corruption. Zhang, aged 76, previously served as vice-chair of the Party’s highest military commission and fought in Vietnam in 1979 and 1984; he is also the son of a Communist Party founder.

Liu held comparable high-ranking positions. The move highlights President Xi Jinping’s ongoing campaign to eliminate corrupt influences and consolidate control over the military hierarchy.

Why it matters

The expulsions signal a deepening anti-corruption drive that could reshape China’s military leadership.
