China's August exports surge 25% driven by cars and high-tech products

China's customs data show a 25% year-on-year jump in August exports, led by strong demand for automobiles and high-technology goods.

China reported a 25% increase in August exports over the previous year, with imports also climbing 28.2%, expanding the trade surplus to $119.1 billion. The growth was driven primarily by higher demand for automobiles, electric vehicles, industrial machinery and semiconductor products. Senior market strategist Chi Lo highlighted China's move up the value chain into AI infrastructure and industrial automation.

The data arrive before a scheduled meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, where the large trade surplus will likely be a focal point. Meanwhile, China has been less affected by the Iran conflict and is increasing sales to regions such as Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa, cushioning the impact of U.S. tariffs. The EU is also preparing ministerial trade talks as it seeks to reduce its daily trade deficit with China. Domestically, China announced a $54 billion injection into state banks and insurers to support its economy.
