China's central bank ramps up gold purchases, hitting a monthly high
Beijing's central bank has accelerated its gold buying, acquiring a record amount for a single month in 2026.
The People's Bank of China increased its gold acquisitions in 2026, raising its reserves from the end of 2025 to August. For the month alone, the bank bought roughly 20 tonnes, the largest monthly purchase since October 2023. This surge places China as the world's fifth-largest holder of the metal.
