China's hospital ships showcase soft power through medical missions in West Africa
China's PLA hospital ship Auspicious Ark visited Dakar and Nouakchott, providing medical services such as childbirth, cataract surgery and thousands of patient consultations.
The Chinese naval hospital vessel Auspicious Ark arrived in Dakar, Senegal, on September 25, presenting a public-health outreach rather than a traditional military deployment. Earlier, the ship spent a week in Nouakchott, Mauritania, where it assisted a high-risk pregnancy that resulted in a birth aboard the ship and performed its first cataract operation of the tour. During its stay, the vessel handled more than 1,600 patient visits in a single day, highlighting a humanitarian dimension to China's naval presence in Africa.
