China's J-50 stealth fighter targets autonomous flight, quantum navigation and drone swarms
Chinese designers of the J-50 stealth fighter are researching autonomous control, satellite-free quantum navigation and coordinated drone operations.
Researchers at the Shenyang Aircraft Design & Research Institute have published a study describing a "leapfrog transformation" for future Chinese fighters, specifically the aircraft commonly referred to as the J-50. Led by chief flight-control designer Zhang Dong, the paper proposes systems that can assume control if a pilot loses consciousness or is overloaded, allowing the jet to continue its mission autonomously. It also explores quantum navigation techniques to maintain accurate positioning without reliance on satellite signals, countering potential GPS jamming.
Additionally, the study envisions the fighter operating as a hub for swarms of drones, assigning them roles such as strike, surveillance and escort, and dynamically reconfiguring formations as battle conditions evolve. The J-50, a smaller, twin-engine, tailless design, has progressed through flight testing alongside the larger J-36 program, reflecting China's dual approach to sixth-generation air power. Together, these developments aim to accelerate China’s fighter capabilities beyond incremental upgrades.
