China's rapid solar expansion linked to declines in bird diversity, study shows

A new nationwide analysis finds that stricter solar-energy policies in China have coincided with reduced bird diversity over the past decade.

An extensive study covering over 2,300 counties across China reveals that areas enforcing stricter solar-energy development policies have seen a measurable decline in bird diversity during the last ten years. The analysis, led by associate professor Huiming Zhang of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, situates solar expansion alongside established anthropogenic threats like habitat conversion and climate change.

Even where developers planted new vegetation after constructing solar farms, the effort failed to halt the loss of bird species, a shortfall the authors label “inferior greening.” Published in the journal Science, the paper calls for directing large-scale solar projects toward sites with fewer ecological conflicts and integrating biodiversity protections early in project design. Conservation scientist Ken Rosenberg of Cornell University, who was not involved in the work, cautioned that diversity indices may mask the health of individual bird populations and suggested future research focus on population numbers. He emphasized the need to avoid swapping one environmental crisis for another by considering biodiversity alongside energy goals.
