China's security worries stall Nepal's bid to reopen key Tatopani trade route
Nepal wants China to reopen the Tatopani border crossing, but Beijing cites security and logistical concerns, keeping trade routes under strain.
Severe floods and landslides have blocked Nepal's primary border points at Rasuwagadhi and Korala, leading the government to lobby for the reopening of the Tatopani crossing in Sindhupalchok. Chinese authorities remain reluctant, citing security concerns over Tibetan refugees, potential anti-China activity, logistical hurdles and recurring landslides. A delegation headed by Anjan Shrestha and the Nepal Trans-Himalayan Border Commerce Association appealed to Ambassador Zhang Maoming, who suggested a limited opening for the upcoming Dashain festival might be feasible, but a permanent operation demands a detailed assessment.
Nepalese officials point out that Tatopani can deliver freight to Kathmandu in 10-12 days at roughly Rs50,000, far cheaper than the Rs500,000 cost via Korala, making it vital before winter closures. Although an inspection team reported no major road problems, Beijing has yet to issue a final decision, leaving traders uncertain about supply chains ahead of the country's biggest shopping season.
Why it matters
The crossing determines Nepal's ability to import affordable goods before its major festival and winter, affecting the economy and regional trade.
