China to dispatch special envoy to Middle East to curb conflict spillover

China's foreign ministry said it will soon send a special envoy to the Middle East and nearby regions to promote dialogue and prevent the conflict from spreading.

At a daily press conference, Guo Jiakun said China plans to send a special envoy to the Middle East and adjacent regions in the near future, aiming to foster dialogue and stop the conflict from expanding. He urged all parties to resolve disputes through negotiation and highlighted worries about the war spilling over into the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. The envoy’s mission will involve meetings with officials in the area to improve communication and reduce tensions.

This diplomatic step comes after senior figures from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan gathered with Iranian leaders in Tehran to de-escalate the situation. Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthis have launched fresh attacks on Saudi Arabia and Egypt has approved defence assistance for the kingdom. Earlier, Chinese and Djiboutian foreign ministers met in Beijing, agreeing that easing Middle East tensions is essential for security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

Why it matters

China's envoy could help limit a regional war from spreading to Africa and global shipping lanes.
