China tops troop count while the US dominates aircraft; India ranks among the top five overall

2026 data shows China has the largest active military and tank fleets, the United States leads in total aircraft, and India places in the top five across all four categories.

Global Firepower's 2026 rankings, as presented by Visual Capitalist, reveal that China commands the world’s largest active military personnel count at 2.035 million and the highest tank inventory with 5,870 units. The United States surpasses all others in total aircraft, operating 13,032 planes, which exceeds the combined totals of Russia, China, India and South Korea. India holds the second-largest active force at 1.431 million and sits in the top five for tanks (3,913), aircraft (2,183) and naval vessels (343).

Russia and North Korea share fourth place in troop numbers, while Russia and China rank second and third respectively in aircraft counts. Naval rankings shift when measured by displacement, placing the United States first and India second. The report notes that raw equipment numbers do not directly translate to combat effectiveness or readiness.
