At the 55th Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, Taiwan’s foreign affairs minister Lin Chia-lung headed a delegation and cautioned that China is actively trying to undermine regional cooperation. The official explained that although a few Pacific leaders attended at ministerial level, such representation should not be read as a sign of disunity. Taiwan, present in the forum as a development partner since 1993, has contributed to programs such as the Pacific Resilience Facility and the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
In contrast, China’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile test and its political leverage over certain members have heightened security worries and strained the ability of Pacific states to form a unified stance. Palau’s president called for a collective response to the missile launch, while Taiwan reaffirmed its support for peace and stability without forcing nations to choose between Taipei and Beijing.
