Chinese automakers show growing interest in Austria's production and development sector
The Austrian Business Agency reports that Chinese vehicle manufacturers are actively exploring Austria for manufacturing and R&D facilities.
According to René Tritscher, head of the Austrian Business Agency, Chinese companies are expressing interest in establishing production and development operations in Austria, targeting the full automotive supply chain. The interest spans manufacturers of passenger cars, commercial vehicles, two-wheelers, battery producers, component suppliers, and firms offering electrification and software solutions. Austria’s established automotive and supplier ecosystem, combined with its R&D capabilities and experience in contract manufacturing with firms like Magna, is a key draw.
Current joint projects see Magna Steyr assembling electric cars for Xpeng and GAC in Graz, while Steyr Automotive produces trucks for SuperPanther and Sinotruck using a semi-knocked-down approach. The Austrian Ministry of Economy stresses that foreign investment should create domestic value, innovation and employment, and it is monitoring such deals through investment controls.
