Chinese carrier launches first regular Arctic shipping line to Europe

Sea Legend announced the start of a regular Arctic shipping service, deploying the container ship Dubai Tower on a route between Ningbo and Teesport that takes about 20 days, roughly half the duration of the Suez Canal passage. The company has scheduled seven more trips before the Arctic passage becomes impassable after October. The reduced distance shortens the journey by several thousand kilometres, lowering costs amid current geopolitical tensions.

Li Xiaobin, Sea Legend Line’s operations director, said the aim is to develop the Arctic corridor into a major alternative route and eventually enable year-round navigation within a decade. Environmental groups warned that increased commercial traffic could harm fragile Arctic ecosystems. The venture relies on ice-free conditions caused by global warming, which also raises concerns about coastal flooding from rising sea levels.
