Chinese envoy discusses investment growth and environmental compliance in Hungary

Ambassador Gong Tao said Chinese investment in Hungary is expanding, noting recent licensing for CATL's battery plant and ongoing talks with the new government over environmental rules.

Chinese Ambassador to Hungary Gong Tao used a press event to underline the deepening economic ties between the two countries, pointing to the recent grant of an operating licence for CATL's battery-cell facility in Debrecen. He referenced earlier incidents where CATL discharged a non-toxic dye into the sewer system, leading to the revocation of its wastewater pre-treatment permit, and a shutdown of Semcorp over alleged pollution, noting that both firms have since cooperated with authorities and provided new test results.

Gong said he has met with multiple ministers of the new Hungarian government to discuss how Chinese firms can meet Hungarian and EU environmental standards. He also emphasized broader cooperation in tourism, culture and education, citing 24 direct flights per one outlet that bring roughly 130,000 Chinese tourists to Hungary each year.
