Chinese exchange student expelled after posting video appearing to pinch President Lai

A Chinese student at National Taiwan University was deported and barred from Taiwan for five years after a video showed him seemingly pinching President Lai Ching-te.

Wang, a Chinese exchange participant at National Taiwan University, uploaded a Douyin video that appeared to show him pinching President Lai Ching-te during a talent-development event. The post, captioned with remarks about Lai and hashtags supporting cross-strait unification, sparked online criticism. The National Immigration Agency, invoking Article 12 of the relevant regulations, revoked his entry permit, deported him and imposed a five-year ban on re-entry, after coordination with the Ministry of Education and the Mainland Affairs Council.

Wang later removed the video, issued an apology, and acknowledged the inappropriateness of his actions. NTU confirmed it had accompanied Wang during questioning and emphasized respect for legal enforcement while maintaining a commitment to free speech. The Strait Exchange Foundation’s Luo Wen-jia initially suggested the student could stay, but later expressed respect for the authorities’ decision, hoping the case would not hinder future student exchanges.

Why it matters

The case highlights tensions over free expression and cross-strait relations, showing how Taiwan enforces dignity standards for mainland visitors.
