Chinese Indie Hit 'Dear You' Set for Limited U.S. Release on Sept. 4
The low-budget Chinese drama 'Dear You', which earned nearly $300 million domestically, will open in select U.S. theaters on Sept 4 via Well Go USA.
Chinese family drama 'Dear You' was shot in the minority Teochew language on a $2 million budget and later amassed almost $300 million at the Chinese box office, holding the No. 1 spot for over 20 days. Director Lan Hongchun crafted the story from interviews with more than 120 elderly Chaoshan residents, following a grandson's quest in Thailand to find his missing grandfather. The cast is largely non-professional, led by 22-year-old finance graduate Li Sitong.
Produced by Luo Zhanhong, Xie Ying, Zheng Xuanxuan and Lin Guoming, the film opened in China on April 30 and earned a Douban rating of 9.3. It premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival in July. Well Go USA Entertainment, headed by Doris Pfardrescher, unveiled a U.S. trailer and will roll the film out in select North American theaters on Sept 4.
