Chinese inmate fined after cocaine discovered during Santiago Uno prison search

Haifeng Tang, a Chinese national incarcerated in Santiago Uno prison, was fined by the Seventh Guarantee Court of Santiago after a search on August 12 revealed two sealed packets of cocaine, roughly a gram in total. The discovery came a day before his planned move to the maximum-security La Laguna facility, part of President Jose Antonio Kast’s prison policy. Prosecutors have tied Tang to the same Chinese criminal network that was the focus of a major police operation last year and a subsequent raid in June.

In addition to the drug charge, Tang remains accused of homicide, kidnapping, drug trafficking, weapons possession and criminal association, with the homicide victim identified as another Chinese citizen. The court set the penalty at 71,649 pesos, offering a six-month custodial term if the fine is not paid.
