Chinese J-16s Face Egyptian Rafales in Historic Simulated Dogfight
During the China-Egypt Eagles of Civilization 2026 drills in Egypt, Chinese J-16 fighters engaged Egyptian Rafales in their first simulated one-on-one combat.
In the inaugural day of the China-Egypt Eagles of Civilization 2026 air exercise, Chinese J-16 jets and Egyptian Rafales conducted simulated one-on-one combat, marking the first time the PLA Air Force has faced a Rafale in a structured drill. CCTV News reported that pilots from both sides briefed each other on performance traits, flight-safety rules and emergency response measures. The exercise is slated to progress to two-on-two scenarios and eventually to integrated joint operations.
Aviation analyst Wang Yanan told one outlet that the encounter offers China valuable insight into the Rafale’s maneuverability and tactics, especially since India fields the same type. While the Egyptian aircraft differ from Indian versions in weapons and software, the training provides Beijing with a unique data point. New Delhi is watching the development, viewing it as a potential factor in any future air confrontation over the Himalayas.
