Chinese maglev test hits 800 km/h in just over five seconds

An experimental maglev vehicle built by Donghu Laboratory accelerated to 800 km/h in 5.3 seconds on a 1-km track in Hubei.

China’s Donghu Laboratory has pushed its experimental maglev prototype to 800 km/h, achieving the speed in 5.3 seconds on a one-kilometre test track in Hubei. The 1,110-kg vehicle, now holding three world records within six months, uses magnetic forces to levitate and propel, effectively acting like a slingshot. While China’s commercial Fuxing maglev runs at about 349 km/h, this test far exceeds that figure but is not intended for passenger trains.

Engineers highlight the extreme precision required, with track alignment tolerances of 0.5 mm and complex control of levitation, positioning and propulsion. The trials also explore high-power energy delivery, emergency braking and other technologies that could be adapted for rockets, drones, military aircraft and specialized industrial transport. Although still experimental, the results showcase a new direction for magnetic acceleration beyond rail travel.
