Chinese netizens lash out over Taiwan Coast Guard’s water-cannon clash with fishing boat

A Taiwan Coast Guard vessel fired a water cannon at a Chinese fishing boat near the Pratas Islands, prompting widespread anger on Chinese social media and criticism of both Taipei and Beijing.

On October 1, a Taiwan Coast Guard ship used a water cannon to force a mainland Chinese fishing vessel to leave the waters around the Pratas (Dongsha) Islands after the boat refused to comply. The episode came just after Taiwan had detained another Chinese trawler near Penghu and taken its seven crew members into custody. Clips of the water-cannon attack spread rapidly on Chinese platforms, sparking accusations that Taipei was deliberately provoking Beijing on the PRC’s National Day and drawing criticism of both the Taiwanese action and the Chinese government’s overall policy.

Some observers argued that Beijing’s repeated concessions have emboldened Taiwan, while others questioned the mainland’s ability to protect its fishermen. The Taiwan Affairs Office responded only with a call for Taiwan to avoid “heavy-handed” tactics, echoing a pattern of restraint seen after the February 2024 Kinmen incident that left two fishermen dead. Analysts suggest Beijing must balance deterrence with its self-image as a peace guarantor, as a harsher response could deepen Taiwanese perceptions of a mainland threat and fuel nationalist anger at home. Recent polls show a nuanced Chinese public attitude toward Taiwan, with cultural affinity coexisting with opposition to independence, but maritime clashes risk eroding that ambivalence.
