Chinese Risun Group visits Liberty Galați as interest in steel plant grows

Representatives of China's Risun Group toured the Liberty Galați steel plant, joining other potential investors evaluating a possible sale.

Interest in the Liberty Galați steel complex is rising as the owner prepares to sell the asset through direct negotiations after earlier auction attempts failed. On Tuesday, a team from China's Risun Group, a leading producer of metallurgical coke and related chemicals, visited the facility and met with local management, who detailed the plant's technical and commercial capabilities. The Chinese delegation examined core areas such as the primary production zone and the rolling mill operations.

While Risun does not produce steel itself, it is a crucial supplier in the steel supply chain. Previously, delegations from Indian Jindal Steel, Dorinel Umbrărescu-controlled UMB Steel, and Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Ahmetov's Metinvest also inspected the plant, signaling broad international interest.

Why it matters

The visit highlights growing foreign interest in Romania's key steel asset, which could reshape the country's industrial landscape.
