Chinese tech firms accelerate AI-powered smart glasses amid privacy debates

Alibaba Cloud recently launched a glasses-specific version of its AI coding service, and Tencent is rolling out its office agent on jointly branded Rokid smart-glass frames. Popularity for such wearables is rising in China, prompting the government to issue an industry code of conduct that obliges manufacturers to display obvious signals when recording devices are in use. A comparable issue has emerged in the United States, where Meta turned off cameras on thousands of glasses after they were tampered with for covert recording.

Chinese companies adopting the technology could inadvertently expose sensitive corporate data, including proprietary code and documents. Nonetheless, China's top-down regulatory framework enables rapid governmental action if privacy or security problems arise, contrasting with the slower, fragmented response seen in the U.S.
