Chios Airport Shut for Four Months to Complete Expansion Ahead of 2027 Summer

The transport ministry confirmed that Chios Airport will close for four months to finish the second and third phases of its expansion, with reopening slated for March 15.

A transport ministry paper presented at an emergency Chios municipal council meeting details a four-month closure of Chios Airport, merging the second and third phases of its expansion. The shutdown, scheduled to end on March 15, is intended to enhance construction safety, limit delays caused by weather, and ensure the airport is ready for the 2027 summer tourist season. Officials noted that the timing avoids the island’s high-season traffic but still impacts roughly 60,000 residents who depend on air travel.

The document permits helicopters to use the parking apron for medical evacuations and state missions. Local stakeholders called for additional ferry connections, assistance for patients and vulnerable residents, and transparent updates on construction milestones.

Why it matters

The closure affects travel for tens of thousands of residents and tourists, highlighting infrastructure challenges on the island.
