Chongqing Accelerates Push to Become a Global Shopping and Tourism Hub

Chongqing reports record retail sales of RMB 1.67 trillion in 2025 and aims to cement its status as an international consumer destination.

Chongqing is positioning itself as a premier global consumption centre, with 2025 retail sales of consumer goods reaching RMB 1.67 trillion, the highest among Chinese cities, and drawing more than half a billion visitors each year. Its manufacturing strength in new-energy vehicles, motorcycles and laptops fuels demand, while over 2,800 domestic and international brands—among them 325 Fortune Global 500 companies—have launched flagship outlets.

The city has revamped 30 commercial districts and created 100 new retail experiences along rivers, cliffs and rooftops, turning everyday spaces into attractions. Tourism is bolstered by Yangtze River cruises, low-altitude sightseeing, hot-spring wellness and 17 premium routes promoted worldwide. Trade links span 228 countries via the China-Europe Railway Express and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, and simplified visa, payment and tax-refund procedures aim to ease travel for foreign guests.

Why it matters
