Chris Rock Debuts New Film Misty Green at TIFF, Says He Won’t Return to Oscars Without a Nomination

Chris Rock’s new feature, Misty Green, is set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival before a wider theatrical release by A24 in October. The film follows a once-famous actress, played by Rosalind Eleazar, who struggles financially after her benefactor dies, and features supporting roles from Anna Kendrick, Adam Driver and Daniel Kaluuya. Rock, who last directed a film twelve years ago, called the $5 million picture a “tiny” but pivotal project, noting his recent diagnosis of non-verbal learning disorder has improved his focus and empathy.

He explained that the story reflects Hollywood’s stark contrast between wealth and homelessness, a theme he finds personally resonant. In the same interview, Rock said he will not appear at future Oscars ceremonies unless he is nominated, referencing the 2022 incident with Will Smith. He also discussed his transition from stand-up to writing and directing, emphasizing a desire to create art that balances popular appeal with artistic integrity.
